Planet Mars controls the Kitchen. Mars is a fiery planet, and the kitchen is also a place of fire. All Kitchen items such as utensils, oven, gas, spices all represent Mars. As we know Mars is one of the Malefic planets and causes injury, food poisoning and accidents. So, it is very important that we pay attention to the placement of Kitchen.

As per Vastu, the ideal location for Kitchen is the South-East corner, as per compass it is 1121⁄2° to 1571⁄2°. Venus is the ruler and Agni is the Deity of South-East direction. South-East is the corner which can neutralise the extra fire/heat produced in the kitchen due to the presence of fire, species, and other utensils. If South-East is not possible then another option is to use the North-West corner, however the cooking platform should be in the South-East corner of any kitchen.

The wrong placement of the Kitchen can create different kind of problems depending on the location for example the Kitchen in the North is inauspicious. Mars of kitchen afflicts Kubera/Mercury of North and causes excessive expenses, apart from other Mars-Mercury issues. Kitchen in the North-East (Ishan) is extremely inauspicious and create problems in different areas of life. Kitchen should also be away from the toilet as Rahu of toilet combining with Mars can create fire, blood impurities and food poisoning etc.

Some other tips –

• While cooking the face should be towards East.
• Sink and Hob should not be in the same platform.
• Heavy kitchen appliances should be alongside the Southern wall.  
• Sink or basin should ideally be in the North-East corner.

It is very important to review/analyse the map of the whole house to decide the location/design of the Kitchen as sometimes it is not possible to make kitchen in the South-East or North-West direction. Some remedial measures are also used to correct certain flaws in the Kitchen Vastu.
